Choreographer Laura Johnston-Scott | plan B
Dancers: Laura Johnston-Scott & Laura MacLennan

An original piece of dance theatre exploring the meaning, metaphor and symbols of compulsive behaviours and addiction.

By looking at the balance between the inner feminine and masculine spirits, the artists investigate the theme of control (also the fear of losing it), the vicious circle of how the rewarding effects from destructive behaviour provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue it.

They explore the consequences of comparison and a pervasive sense of not fitting in - a need to keep pain hidden from view.

Work in
Progress

Short Dance Film | Nil by Mouth
25th November 2014 The Scottish Parliament
1st - 8th December 2014 The Tent Gallery, Edinburgh

Commissioned upon inivtiation by Hans Clausen for Nil By Mouth.

Nil by Mouth was designed and is administered through a partnership between The Crichton Carbon Centre, Creative Scotland and the creative organisation Wide Open. Part of Wide Open’s own statement of intent offers a useful description of the philosophical approach of the Nil by Mouth residency programme; ‘... working within cultural, social and physical contexts to evolve interdisciplinary creative processes that reveal and explore identity, distinctiveness and potential of place and people.’.

Nil by Mouth has a talent development remit for the participating artists, ‘promoting professional development, connectivity and ambition’.  Each artist was invited to make one piece of work which explored an aspect of Nil by Mouth’s topics of interest.

Outdoor performance in Howmore – South Uist.

Choreography and performance: Laura Johnston.

Music: Gaoth an Iar – Peigi and Margaret Campbell.

Artwork back story:

I am interested in making everyday actions and elements a source of inspiration and a place of initial movement. This piece explored the way in which crofters move across the landscape, always responding to the challenges of the often extreme Hebridean environment and weather.

The repetitiveness of the piece underlines the daily hard work of the crofter as well as referencing how the crofter is constantly bound to the land, the weather and the seasons, year in and year out.

This work was develop to honour crofting, central aspect of Uist culture and way of life, vital for the sustainability of the land, the fragile environment and in maintaining a healthy population.

4x4 LAB

Dance, Body and the Environment |Residency
18th - 28th March 2014

Awarded a full artist bursary for Bodysurf's 10 day residency and development intensive, equally split between Findhorn village and the Isle of Eigg.

The 4x4 mentor was Jennifer Monson of iLand (USA) whose experience supported the richness and diversity of the intensive and posed critical question of choreographic practice and performance in this context.

Through this particular research week I became more interested in the childhood experiences towards our physicality’s and our tacit knowledge and  relationships to place and memory.

I am currently researching a piece in response to the residency entitled 'Out of Place', an investigation into sense of place and misplacement of people.

Landings

by Jackie Adkins & Cathy Giles | Performer.
A dance performance part of Culture Day, 21st September 2013, Finhorn Village

This piece was developed by the performers under the artistic direction of Cath Giles and Jackie Adkins.

Five figures inhabit the threshold between land and water. Inspired by the stability and fragility of both human and natural worlds - they traverse places where stone, metal and wood give way to water, wind and sky. They are accompanied by echoes of the harbour's busting past and the call of the sea birds.

Peripeteia

a piece by Joe Lott Dance | Performer.
developped and performed in 2011.

Loosely inspired by the story of Dido and Aeneas, with music by Oni Ayhun and Olafur Arnalds, Peripeteia is about our human desire to share our stories with others. Seeking to be understood, the four dancers in this piece make ardent protests, declarations of love and find themselves elated by the joy of movement.

Joe Lott Dance is led by artistic director Josephine Lott. They have produced a number of short, award-winning, dance films, and many well-received theatre pieces.
